A man of great controversy Randle McMurphy changes the asylum forever, from the moment he set foot through the door. His loud, genuine laughter is completely new to the patients who have become accustomed to repressed emotions due to the dictatorship of Nurse Ratched. He was moved from a six-month sentence at Pendleton work farm, he believes that the hospital is more comfortable for him and that he can manipulate the system to his own benefit. He acts out in rebellion towards Nurse Ratched who feels threatened by McMurphy challenging her power.
Through the narration of Chief Bromden we can conclude that he is actually not crazy, though his actions speak otherwise. McMurphy's individualism calls the patients to join him in rebellion in hope that the patients themselves will find their voice. To no avail, McMurphy soon realizes that his power stands below that of Nurse Ratched her command to finally end his rebellious voice will succeed. Unfortunately McMurphy enters the insane asylum sane only to fall in a "crown of thorns" to the command of Nurse Ratched who turns him into a helpless vegetable.
